What Readers Tell Authors (That They Don’t Always Realize Matters So Much)

After a book event ends, the tables fold up.The banners come down.Suitcases get repacked. And eventually, we all head home.

But what readers may not always realize is this:

Authors don’t come home alone. We carry conversations with us.

Over the weekend, I heard readers talk about the characters they connected with. The scenes they remembered long after finishing a book. The moments that made them laugh, curse…and the ones that made them pause and quietly reflect before turning the next page.

And, I cannot forget about my fellow authors. The roundtable discussions held over drinks, where no topic was off limits. Victories to daily barriers & challenges. Brainstorming ideas for new series or collaborating on upcoming projects. Author struggles. Business, branding and bettering oneself.

Those conversations stay with me, and create this emotional high. It's invigorating. Inspiring. Motivational. You can't just ride the wave of it all though. You have to act on it, in the moment...or at least, before the feels fade away!

One of the things I love most about meeting readers in person is hearing what they’re looking forward to next. Not just new releases—but new journeys. New characters. New emotional moments they hope to experience.

That kind of trust is something I never take lightly.

It reminds me that writing romance isn’t just about telling stories.

It’s about building connection.

It’s about creating characters who feel real enough to sit beside you while you drink your coffee.

It’s about writing moments that feel like hope when readers need it most.

And sometimes it’s about simply reminding someone that happy endings still exist.

As writers, we spend a lot of time alone with our keyboards and our thoughts.

But readers make the stories come alive.

So if you’ve ever told an author that a character stayed with you…

If you’ve ever shared that a scene meant something personal to you…

If you’ve ever said you’re waiting for the next book…

Please know this:

We carry those words home with us.

And they matter more than you think.

Today’s Brew ☕ Dalgona Iced Coffee, my own special recipe!

Today’s Ink ✍🏽 Britanni Carlisle has pushed her way to the front of my brain, screaming for her story to be told in Secret Royalty. Elise, her mother, is missing. Just up and poofed! out. Brit's life is on the line...and only one person can help, Jason Donovan. Only a few more chapters to go!

Until next time—keep your coffee warm, your stories close, and your creativity brewing.—Heather Rae
